Needle felting is an art form that is performed by using a felting needle to stab soft wool fibers (wool roving, pictured below) together into a stiff form. By agitating the wool roving with a needle, it locks the fibers tightly. It can be locked into a sheet of felt (pictured top left) or can be made into 3D sculptures (pictured bottom left). I think it is best to introduce felting to older students because more care is involved with a sharp needle.
I experimented with felting by stabbing the wool roving into a felt sheet. I loved being able to lock the wool into place but also be able to leave parts of it fluffy. I found felting to be very calming and meditative.
Right after experimenting with needle felting, I got to take a trip to Iceland. There are about 800,000 sheep in Iceland. It was really amazing to see the abundant amount of sheep and how turned their wool into beautiful wool roving. It was neat to find little 3D felting sculptures in the gift shops.
